I saw these being made up on Friday by the track crew. Took these on Sunday & noticed that the rails aren't continuously welded; there were some gaps in them. Then on Monday they were separated into 2 or 3 sections. Pretty neat to see them that long. They're at Straight Path Rd on the Central Branch to be installed this week. I have more detailed shots if anyone's interested in how the rails are installed on the concrete ties or for modeling purposes.

Are they using them for grade crossing upgrades?

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. The crossing just behind me in the photos will be replaced. One section of the rubber padding is missing & the whole thing is raised above the road level. This makes people jam on their brakes when they get right up there or go into the middle of the lanes almost into oncoming traffic to avoid the bad spot. (I find if you hit it at the right speed you go airborn over it and don't feel a thing until you come down on the other side. Wink)Hopefully they'll regrade the whole thing with the new rail replacement.

The major work on the crossing was completed last week. Today the Right of Way Dept (that's the name on their equipment trailer) was repaving the road surface on either side of the tracks. Should be nice & even now, no more going airborne over it. Hard hats off to the crew for a very visible job well done.

They did the same here in Smithown at Landing Ave. The built the section of rail and then installed over a weekend  about a month ago.
