What about Steamtown in Scranton? I always here people complaining that there are too many Canadian locos, and not enough American ones. Surely there is someone there you can contact to see about them lending a helping a hand. They certainly fit the location requirements from NYC.
True about the Canadian locos., but they have their plate more than full with OOS steam, and the 2317 was oonly doing rides in the yard area, they don't always have a train that goes out on the main for a long run. I happened to pick the trolley to ride, it took over an hour, and was the longest rail ride offered that day! We also won't go into the PRR 1361 sitting inside the roundhouse, not having anything done to it.......

I'd rather ride the Trolley up the Laurel Line then any of the Steam excursions, you get a nice look at some pretty remote railroad on the Laurel Line.

Well, I haven't been there yet myself, but I figured you'd have more luck with the feds at a national park then dealing with some county supervisor with access to limited funds, if any.

Unfortunately its the opposite.. A buddy used to be with Steamtown..Horror stories. They have a very limited budget and most goes to the park rangers and daily operations, not restorations. They just got a grant to repaint some engines thankfully though.

Would those be the ones in the parking lot, the Big Boy, and the IC 790? And the trolley ride was sheer luck, only because I never rode one my whole life! They have a beautiful new shop building at the end of the line. Funny thing, we stopped at their other location first, the cramped garage in Buckingham where two cars are getting finished.

I cannot say how happy I am that a Long Island rail museum is finally basing decisions on reality and not the "if we restore it, the LIRR will let us run it" mind set. It has been a long time coming and I hope a reasonable custodian can be found to operate her when the time comes. I wouldn't hold out much hope that you will get much back in a monetary sense. Steam locomotives are not gold mines, most operations are happy if they can pay for fuel and maintenance still be able to write paychecks that don't bounce. I'm sure Strasburg would love 39 (they looked to get 35 many years ago) but with 2 large steamers already and declining revenues, I can't see the need. Hope springs eternal though. Again, congratulations on a reasonable decision given the reality of the situation. Roger We have come to realize the RMLI does not have the physical or financial resources to operate a steam locomotive service at this time. As a New York State Museum, we can not - and we are not going to - sell Engine #39. It is our responsibility as official stewards of a New York State historic artifact to get the locomotive restored and operational to support our Museum's Mission.

Finally, after 30 years of back and forth preservation efforts some one has seen the light! The LIRR will never run 35 or 39. Has any one looked at the operations in Jersey, New hope and Ivyland or Black River? I'm not sure if they have the shop like Strasburg has but they are a closer drive from NY.

Stopped at Strasburg on Feb. 18, 2010, and was invited into the shop for the full tour. Talked to a designated guide regarding all Strasburg projects and was dazzled (naturally) by what they are presently doing. Regarding #39, the only thing that separates a completed G5s from being finished is the cash to complete the job. #39's boiler is, overall, in very good shape. She's a pet project of the crew, as they would love to show off what they can do, particularly in the light of the K4s 1361 debacle at another shop. I think I'm repeating Don's information, but to bring us up to date, here's what I saw: Two views of the backhead and boiler. The beautiful firebox sheet, to be installed. The firebox. A bit of historical grafiti from Juniata Shop crews. "JS 11 19 46 FB". November 19, 1946, a new firebox was installed. "Juniata Shops New Boiler 6-27-29" Installation of the original boiler. We need to find similar marks on #35's boiler as well. Dick It's not a great time to be scrounging up funds, but if anyone has a notion of how to come up with a few thousand bucks (stimulus funds?) for this project, now would be a great time. I was told that if the rest of the locomotive was shipped down to the shops, she'd be finished in about a year. That's a time line with which I can live!

Paul and I have a running conflict regarding the merits of returning steam locomotives to service. This is not to say that we don't have respect for each other. I have nothing but respect for Paul, and very little of that.
