It is excellent to see one of these cars back on the LI again!!  I don't normally visit railroad museums, but will be making a trip out there to take a good look at this car.  The P-54's (in all their various incarnations) represent a decent part of the history of the LIRR.

One thing though, before I make the trip, is the car accessible to the "public" or locked away behind some fencing?  I would like to photograph the car top to bottom, end to end for modeling purposes, but don't want to waste the trip if I cannot get near it.  THANKS and good luck with the car!!

Will it eventually be repainted in LIRR colors??

It's a great contribution, since few intact cars still exist.  This particular is said to be in excellent shape, so while I doubt it will be allowed on LIRR tracks again,  just having one as an artifact is a major piece of our history in preservation.  Not even the RMPA was able to save an MP54.  And of course, it will go back into one of the LIRR schemes.  Frankly, I'd like to see it go back into the early Tichy gray with silver (or was it steel gray?) roof.  A P72 can wear the Goodfellow gray, while Tuscan red can go on something else.  Just my personal choice.

Tichy color scheme:  Slate gray body, dark green undercarriage, bright aluminum roof Beginning 11/1/49 until 11/1/52 (period of painting), Named for designer Lester C. Tichy (1905-1981)

Nice Job. Are you planning on restoring the ceiling fans?
This really takes me back to when I was a kid in the 50's.and 60's.
My parents had a summer house in bayville, on mountain ave, and my dad was (and Is) a RR buff.
As a result he took me to oyster bay many times when I was young.
So I had a bit of railroading in my blood even before I worked there.
The first train I worked on the LIRR was as an extra collector from Jamaica to hicksville.
It was a Port Jeff Train, with all Ping Pong Coaches, In the early summer of 1973.
The train was painted in grey with dashing dan on the side, even in 1973.
The Engine was grey and orange, an alco similar to ( possibly even the one) at the RR museum in Riverhead.
All the other crew members still had their grey uniforms, I was the only one in the recently issued blues.
You never forget your first girlfriend, or first train! Wink
I really like the work you guys and gals are doing, I plan to contribute when I can, starting in the fall.
Keep up the good work guys..I just love the LIRR and its history, its a big part of my life.... unka Bobby. ( I live in Illinois right now, but may come back in the fall)

Great question, and yes we are. As soon as all the arrangements are worked out, we will be picking up the fans and installing them, along with the re-installation of the roof vents which had to be taken off (for height restriction) and replacement of  a few broken windows and of course the ceiling lenses.
Before we took posession of the car, someone broke in and smashed virtually all of the lenses, fortunately, a friend of the museum, Mike Hanna, donated 18 light fixtures for us. We also have original MP54 luggage racks to be installed.

MADDOG, the WF cab looks great! You'd think that photo was from 1964 when the LIRR was painting it. What dates will you put in the numberboards?

The PingPongs I remember had rectangular split windows in the doors. Can't say that my mind is in very good shape. The steam heat left alot to be desired. A very big piece of history, both mine and the LIRR.
