Those C-420's look great!  What is that green thing next to it?
If you're referring to the first shot, it's 271's long hood with the old mural.

I was just looking at the Atlas website. You can get a low hood phase 2B (as they call it) which has the proper railing mounts, and a high short hood & cab, & smoke deflectors from the parts listing. They'll probably fit on the low hood model with no problem. With the large fuel tank, you can paint it to look like 229 in red white & blue. Just the trucks wouldn't be right. Pretend it actually survived & the new operator of it had to swap out the trucks with the AAR type.

Or just cut the long fuel tank to match the prototype & you can have any of the L2s. Someone will probably come out with the hi-ad trucks, so that might be a temporary problem.

Or take a LI unit, remove the round fuel tank & leave off the smoke deflectors, mount the horn on the cab roof & you have one of the first delivered units with the smaller fuel/water tanks.

Lots of possibilities here.......

The Century series were great looking locomotives in all their incarnations.  From what I've seen of these plastic units, they easily rival the brass pieces issued in the late 60's.

If anyone can't find any try MB Kleins online store. http://www.modeltrainstuff.com
They show them still in stock and priced at $179.99 for the Gold units(sound), the Silvers(no sound) are out of stock.

If you can't find one of these at Willis or Trainland, Dave's Custom Trains in Islip Terrace has them. Dave's a member of LIST-NRHS and had a bunch last week.

What size drill bit to use for the horn and smoke defectors on the C 420?
I used a #65 (.035") that seemed to work OK...

I bought a C420 (not the dcc version) in early January, but I was reluctant to do so because I already had a brass one that I painted fairly well.  I like the Atlas one more.  The paint is a little thick, but the colors are pretty good and the crispness is excellent.  It runs better than the Overland.  The smoke lifters are larger and more prototypical.  The hand rails are probably a little too thin and the horn seems a tad too large.  And the trucks don't have real coil springs, but overall, I am very pleased with it.  It runs better than the C-liner and H16-44 I have.  I am glad I bought it, and recommend it to anyone who is hesitating.

Question.  Does anyone know if Atlas painted the top of the long hood correctly?  I cannot remember any top down photos.  Atlas painted the gray-orange boundary in the shape of a parabola the same as the top of an RS3.  For some reason I have the impression that all of the radiator louvers on the prototypes were orange, and the gray-orange boundary line was the back of the radiator louvers.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

An article on this model in LIST's Sempaphore reports that Atlas painted the roof of the long hood correctly. John Scala has a photo and verified it. The articles have been posted by Steve on trainsarefun.com.

Another question, does anyone remember seeing the text of the fuel tank stenciling being posted? It's about the lessor of these units & I thought someone posted the entire text. I can't find it in a search though.
