I got an email last evening from Dennis Harrington of RMLI who saw the LIE ping pong car on a trailer without its trucks. Looked like it was ready to move out. Anyone know what's happening to it?

And before everyone asks, the Twin Forks Chapter was offered the car. Here's the quote from the email from Twin Forks:

"Suffolk County offered the ping to Twin Forks free of charge and they would have moved it for free. We asked the Town of Riverhead,  Suffolk County, LIRR and NY&A if they had property or sidings we could put the car and was turned down every time."

Apparently its condition is poor.

Yes,
Twin Forks was offered the car, but we simply had to reject the offer. The car was WAY out of our league of work that was needed.  You literally went through the floor if you walked on it.
I got some photos of it, ill post later on.

Its possibly on the Gershow Express.....

Being that I work for Keyspan, I was in my dept office the other day when I saw the plans for the ping pong coach and asked what they were doing with them. I was told our crane dept was to pick up the coach and place in on a trailer to be scapped. They said the car was in such bad shape that the lift was going to be difficult. Knowing that, somethings are just beyond saving and just have to go to 'their' final resting spots. Oh, well next time.

What a shame!!!!!!!

I remember when they put that car on the LIE. . .I was so happy that a car was preserved, even if it no longer had seats!

One dinosaur to another . . . . .

Someday they'll be taking me away too . . . . . hopefully they won't need a crane!

They offered to move the car for us to, but as I said, we had to decline the offer. Theres just no way she could have been saved with out half a mill...

Dave, hopefully if they do use a crane, your bottom won't fall out!

Sorry to see anther P54 go.  I'm told they are loaded with asbestos, but I don't know if it's around pipes or in the walls, or both.

There was a heavy discussion about the rivet trucks being unsuitable for operation at track sppeds, which is something with which I readily agree.  I am a bit shaken however, when I remember them cruising at speed through Mineola, behind a big C420!  THose suckers moved and those same rivets were under incredible stresses.  Remarkable how time changes the perspective and the material.

Yep, Steve . . . it most probably will take that crane.

And, Dick . . . I, too, hope my bottom doesn't fall through, though presently I still have all my rivets!  I think . . . . .

Wow, yeah...that car doesn't look like it's in the best of shape. It would probably be easier to build one brand new than to repair it lol. It's sad to see it go, but some things are just beyond repair. Believe me. I loved driving out east on the LIE and seeing it as I passed and I will miss it dearly. I still have an empty feeling after they leveled PD tower too....but again, some things are beyond repair and become more trouble to save than they're worth. I give Soundy credit for working up in that tower. I would have been afraid to, especially on a day where there's a light breeze lol.

On the other hand, I've seen some projects done on some old equipment and structures that, while were increadibly expensive, ended up being well worth it. The Union Station up in Worchester Mass for example. My grandfather lived up in Concord NH before passing when I was 7. My parents and I would drive up there occasionally, once a year or so, and we'd usually stop in Worchester to watch trains near that old station...and I remember it being in absolutely horrible shape...and if you looked at it back then, you'd think...yeah, might as well level it. But looking at it now...and I've only seen pictures since they reopened it....it looks dazzling.

Nova55, thanks for those photos. I was always gonna stop by there myself, another lost chance.

Now, does anyone have any history on that car - #, build date? I'll have to dig thru some of my info but I don't remember seeing anything that mentioned that car.

There was a ping-pong or two store away on the West Virginia Northern RR, near Kingwood. They may be still there. The rails have been ripped out. The last time I was there was in'99. I was working as a brakeman on the WVN at the time. Does anyone else know about these cars?
