Yo Fred: You should post some photos of that stang you did. I remember it when you first got it in the garage and  even I had my doubts. Post some before pictures of 8255 and some after we removed the nose off the old girl and sectioned out that nose from that RS3U. While the elements do work against those trying to preserve equipment, there are far more harsher enviroments to deal with than Long Island weather (Mystic Seaport comes to mind). There must be some kind of chemical that is enviromently safe that can be sprayed on the equipment to neutralize the affects of salt in the air. In the Navy, it is scrape and paint. Repeat process. Bridges are constantly scraped and painted in a never ending process. Yup, those rust puppies could be fixed up with the right amount of plate steel, rivets and welding rod.

Here's one that looks good up near Syracuse, NY. These from 2005, the roof looks like it needs attention, but the windows were redone and the car sides look decent:

She doesn't look too badly, Tim, but there is the ever present sill rot once more.  The one up here at Seashore Trolley, in Kennebunkport, has a great roof and the rest is rotten.

I just got the Semaphore from LIST & they mention the LIE car being taken away after many years as an eyesore. The info quoted mentions that it didn't belong in a residential area. Who knew the side of the LIE was a residential area? No mention of where it went, although most likely the scrapyard.
