Dump the Air wrote in 10/7/09: "...The second transition era of the late 60's-mid 70's is just as fun, I find a layout where the dream of the golden days is rotting off the face of the earth much more interesting..."

Perhaps you can expand on this and we can start threads both here and the modeling area.

This era had EL/CNJ/LV/NYNH&H/PRR/NYC/PC/CRR everything painted ever differing schemes. The PC was VERY interesting. The leased boxcar Berwick/FMC boxcars. Roofwalks removed. ACI labels, lube plates, Railbox, etc.

How did this affect LIRR freight sightings? Other thoughts on topic?

Absolutely, Steve!  I remember when the C-Liners got straight gray over the Tichy paint, and wore a circle LI logo.  That era faded all too quickly, drab as it was.  As a boy, I recall spotting a Great Northern "green glacier" boxcar down by Georgia Pacific, in Syosset, just after seeing one in my first copy of Model Railroader.  Thinking about it today, reviewing some images, such as those you posted, the sheer variety of freight cars was amazing.  As I recall, we were heavy on Pennsy, Erie, Western Maryland, and NYC.  You could regularly count on B&O, Buffalo Creek boxcars with the flour bag logo, Seaboard box cars, and far more.  I don't remember heavy tank car traffic in those days, hoppers boomed, especially on the Port Jeff line.
Even the passenger car fleet was a mixed on permutations.  Both clerestory and monitor roof P54's, coaches of the B&M, PRR, our own breeds circa 1955.  MU trains were always a wild mix.  It was so much fun to stand at the east end of Jamaica platform for just that reason.  A club dedicated to simply showing the LIRR between Morris Park and Holban Yard could endlessly perfect a vision in time.
One more thing in your pictures that I don't believe exists anymore is the "tell-tale" hanging just beyond the photographers perch.

Good thread  Great pictures.

GN Big Sky Blue D&H Oneonta, NY '72 pretty indicative of the material remaining in the D&H Oneonta yard in 1972. Removed roofwalk and see how the ladders have been gutted. The once huge yard with a 360 degree roundhouse is nearly a ghost town. 70% of the cars have roofwalks gone and many are just in storage awaiting scrap.

My 1965 Galaxie 500; nice car when new!

Yipes, Is the best we can do? 7 photos I posted...  I thought we might have enough folks here that might have photos/find this of interest. "News at 11:00"

ACI scanning label were required by the AAR to install ACI labels on their cars. This requirement lead to full-scale implementation of the ACI system in the early 1970s. No lubes plates pre 1973, roof walks gone, etc.

LV 8200-8259, a series of 50 ft uninsulated PRR-built X58B outside braced plug door cars, were also painted white with black roofs and ends.

Photo believed: circa 1970-73... It is an adventure in this PC to CR era 1968–1976
Anyone?

I rarely shot the cars in a train, as "they were always going to be there."

Is this a variation of "not shooting the engines" as "they were always going to be there."? :-)   If so; what did folks photo? LOL

Here's a great example of the "transition mayhem":

EL (1960-1976) boxcar at Port Jefferson photo: 1978, ACI label applied and roofwalks/ladders gutted  (post 1968), consolidated stencil (post 1974), inclusion into Conrail 1972 This is the Purina location NW corner. Photo: Steven Lynch  1978 (sorry the photo is poor Cheesy)

Actually a really nice car to model for this transition era; especially a 40'

What I always found interesting was so many forty footers would show up with heavy modifications almost immediately.  Roof walks were stripped, ladders cut about halfway.  It was like an immediate scrap drive was underway.  Perhaps it had to do with insurance liability?  Another car we'd see on the LIRR were the Pennsy and B&O wagon-top boxcars.  Those were rare beasts, but they'd roll up the Port Jeff line fairly often.
