It is my understanding that another LIRR group has been initiated on Yahoo Groups.

Steve (NYandW) seems to be the only active poster.  Unmoderated Yahoo groups have been an unmitigated disaster in the past for LIRR stuff.  Good luck to whoever is responsible for this!

Honestly, I have to agree with Kyle.  We've kept a short lead on nonsense in this group, but our predecessors are been started with best intentions and gone the Hell in weeks.  I would love to see more activity in here, but people have either quit or are seasonally dormant.  That being said, I wish the Yahoo group the very best of luck and good wishes.

Yahoo groups are either a chore to read or you get annoying digest e-mails, bloated 15+ year old system.

I've had a group of my own on there since Jan, 2005, and I'm up to 259 members.  With the right amount of moderation,  problems can be kept to a minimum.

My group is for swimming pool help (I've been a pool man since 1989), if anyone's interested or wants to take a look...

FYI, it's Steve's group...

A Yahoo group can be great.  A few professional listserves I am part of originated as Yahoo groups.  Anything related to transit goes to Hell because they so often attract people with already-limited social skills; that added to the anonymity of the internet is a recipe for disaster.

Hi Guys: All of you are correct. The previous LongIslandRR group was not moderated and went SPam land. I have asked on/off for years to have the owner do something; totally ignored, thus as stated above a failure.

The urbanmodeling_SIG group I have runs well, the Ry-ops-industrialSIG and ldsig are very successful (not mine).

Email delivery options are:
No emails, individuals, and daily digest.

I find for groups with low volume or my group individual email works. As DTAir stated the Daily digest can get out of hand for large posting groups like the 13 messages today from: Steam era freight car discussion group. The time period covered will be from 1900-1960.

But go visit it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/STMFC/ Great stuff..

I am moderating the LongIslandRailroad group and rather then the sappy usual Hi Welcome Happy  Grin BS start up messages I just posted two messages one on the West Chemical car and the other on the  LIRR Tugs along with picture albums to "seed" the group that it was not going to be a nonsense group like the other.

It's only a few days old. I started it to see if other non-forum folks have info to share. Just a different venue. We shall see.

Yeah, I'm old fashioned on things, and I just try to stick to the same group(s).  That's what counts in my book!  Yahoo, well I no longer have an account with them, and haven't for over 6 months now.

I understand Neil, besides I/we have your input here. Smiley The purpose over at yahoo is to grab other new folk from my historical view.

Ry-ops-industrialSIG and ldsig has thousands of posts in it. I would ask some of the modelers and posters in there how to. After all it is software, not building hardware  Wink  Roll Eyes   The point is well taken as folks don't clean the bottom of their posts and just tack the reply, thus the posts are looong.....
