Can't tell how many tracks at that crossing; looks like at least two, maybe four. I'll guess it's the old Tulip Ave. crossing (manned) in Floral Park.

Sorry, folks I meant to add it's in Babylon. It is a two track crossing. c. 1957-8

Perhaps the photographer meant "near" Babylon as the map shows no crossing guard shanties. Hmm..

This photo was taken in Hicksville during the grade crossing elimination. It is west of the station. I don't remember the name of the street. The view is looking north. I understand the gray house at the end of the street is still there. There is group of photos [7] on the net that show pictures of the elimination project that they refer to as Babylon. It is not Babylon, but Hicksville. I photographed Babylon before the elimination, while the elimination was in progress and after. That photo is no where near Babylon. There is no third rail. Higbee Lane in West Islip is three tracks. It is not Udall Rd which branches off Higbee Lane about 1/4 of a mile north of the railroad. I lived in Babylon for 25 years and my Mother's family lived there since the mid 1800s and I visited my relatives there since i was very young and spent my summer vacations there. Hope I have not rambled on too much about all this

Yes, that is the set. They are all in Hicksville, not Babylon as stated.

That last picture that Lirr168 linked to is definitely Hicksville. That train is switching a siding called Atlantic Pipe (still exists today). Good call Agent

1st crossing AT GRADE west of the station: Charlotte Avenue. 2nd crossing AT GRADE west of the station: Urban Avenue. Then you’re into Westbury. Neither crossings show a crossing shanty on the 1958-Emery maps but they do show gates. Perhaps the lack of crossing shanty(ies) is an oversight on Emery’s part . . . . or maybe not. Charlotte Avenue is two tracks with a siding on the south side which crosses the street. LIRR Agent Retired and everyone else of course What do you think? Steve

I am not as familar with Hicksville as Babylon. So I can not give you a good call as to the name of street. A retired friend who had 38 years with LIRR could not pinpoint the location, He was a Trainmaster among other positions. Did anyone consult Art Huneke or Dave Keller?

Yes, the above data provided is from: Dave Keller. Keller indicates the shanty may be a LIRR temp structure built After Emery 1958 http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/crossingeliminations/crossingeliminations.htm Grade Crossing Elimination
