Geez I worked for the RR for 33 and a half Years, and even I could not tell you where that is, there is just not enough in the photo to give an educated guess.
No landmarks, nothing.
The only thing I can say its in single track non -elecrtrified territory.
Now judging by the amount of cars on the train, that would eliminate the main line east of KO.
Which leaves the montauk east of Y, the central branch, or the port Jeff Branch.
Ill say  St James in the afternoon, looking east.. just a wild guess though

No LIRR 415 got it, and this was taken at the former site of Southampton Campus-LIU Station closed off in 1996.  I actually took the photo from where the old platform was!!!  Here is others taken that day:

The first 2 can be told easily, the third one was a tough one.  Pete, you get your award, so congrats!!!!!

Farm interlocking from the South side looking west. To the north is PC Richards (?) and the beginning of the Price Industrial siding.

stab in the dark, somewhere in the great river-brightwaters-bayshore area cuz of the consist and the road on the south side of the tracks.

Also because of the consist, I believe that is taken on the PJ branch, east of Hicksville, and the train is the 4:01 from Jamaica to Huntington which ran every weekday with that combine car up front to deliver the afternoon papers from the city.  I don't think it usually ran with a C-liner as power, however, but that's my final answer.

The view is south of E. Cherry St. Hicksville looking NW. You can verify the location of the houses in the photo via Bird's Eye view in Bing maps. (The red trim house is on the corner of E. Cherry St.)
The siding is for Troiano Wholesale Distributors (1952+) about at MP 25.25 on Main line just south of Divide.

Steve, I now recall that there was a Ronkonkoma local that left Jamaica around 4:15 or so that would have looked like this, with the C-liner and the combine car for the newspapers.  This train was the first evening rush hour train out of HPA (left just before 4:00).  Nice going on the exact location.
