It is a banner, about 3' x 5' made by the "Hempstead Flag Co. 253 Front St Hempstead NY Phone Ivanhoe 1 7155". This is hand made from individually cut pieces, is 2 sided, with grommets at all 4 corners. it came from a private railroad collection.

Anyone have further insight on this item's origin, use, etc.?

In reading thru Long Island Railroaders from the early 60s, the LIRR had Dashing Dan on a variety of flags, banners & placques. Nothing indicated how they were made - screen printed, embroidered, etc - so it's hard to know exactly if the photo you have is of one that someone made special or it's one that the railroad used. I haven't seen anything on eBay or in any collections that appeared in the LI Railroader. I would expect them to be expensive to get if they did show up. I'm sure some RR workers from back then must have some of these hidden away in their house somewhere.
