Am putting together a RIDEWITHMEHENRY trip on a weekday to Montauk from Penn Sta.  Want to take the 10:20 train to either Babylon then to Speonk then to Montauk.  Question is which, Babylon or Speonk, is the better place for the 40 minute layover to get lunch. Or should we buy lunch at Penn and get the 11:06 to Montauk?  P.S. like the 10:20 to get the Babylon branch in, so if there is an easy lunch, even a MC Donald's near the stations at Babylon or Speonk, the better the trip.

Also, mark my dissapointment of the Lower Montauk 4:54P to Oyster Bay being changed to 4:44P and now goes via Hunterspoint Ave. and the Main Line to Jamaica!!  Is there a chance this will be changed back in future timetables?

henry6, wish I could take that ride with you.  As far as the Lower Montauk, I believe you can still ride train no. 507 from OB westbound in the am.  Would have serious doubts about the return of any eastbound service; think it went the way of Belmont Park service for the LIRR.

The LIRR's motto about some services:  KILL, BABY, KILL!

As far as food in Babylon, not much other than delis and such. chains are few and far between (Its a quaint town, lots of local joints). Now Speonk on not toatally sure about, but I'm fairly certain that the only pheasable food in that area is in the former station, which I *believe* is a cafe now. It might have closed for all I know (Never been there).

Train 560 probably will never be turned back unless 662 is changed back to old ways, but they've found a way to notonly still run efficiently, but also ease the congestion on the Main Line.

But are the Deli's of Babylon close enough to the station to grab a sandwich (even take with us) and get back to the station for the 12:10 Montauk train?

There's a couple of pizza shops and delis right next to the station.

You'll definitely find something at Babylon for lunch. Last time I was at Speonk in 2008 & the cafe in the station looked closed.

The TrackSide Cafe', located at the historical SPEONK station is open!!!!  Monday to Friday, 6 am to 3 pm, Saturday, 7am to 3 pm, and Sundays, 8 am to 3 pm. Good basic food, with daily specials. Also, loaded with old pictures of Speonk and Eastport. Caboose are by George W. Reasonable prices, cash only.

Thanks, PT.  I'm really glad to hear that.  Rather do lunch at Speonk as I've ridden through so many times but never stopped to check it out!

There are places to get food to go on montauk Highway in Speonk.
A block from the crossing at the traffic light.
