Quite a while back someone asked about a photo of the audible, automated warning signs at the Bethpage Station. I got this photo of it but the shutter speed was too fast to capture the message. The message includes text that a second train is approaching as well as an image of a train. The black speaker in the photo gives the audible warning of a second train approaching. In this case a westbound diesel was passing through followed by an eastbound MU train.

Also, can someone tell me what this marker (the number 60 is on it) is just past the Stewart Ave crossing, opposite the station building? It's not the milepost which is just past the Broadway crossing.

I believe it is the maximum speed limit.
 for that section of track.

That sign is the permanent speed restriction sign for the limits of Beth Interlocking & the curve east thereof which is 60mph for both Mainlines 1 and 2.  When diverging onto the Central Branch, the curve is 55mph which is not posted on a sign in either direction.  The milepost east of Broadway crossing is 28.

Railroad speak!! After 34 years of having to know how to say it like that I have not thought that way for 4 years now.. my head almost exploded when I read that. For those who dont work for the RR, Engineers and Conductors have to qualify on the entire RR, and be able to recite it like that.
Wow it all came back.. I have a headache now lol Grin

I had asked about it with a photo I posted a long time ago, but got no responses back then (that I can recall).  Thanks for the info.  I had no idea what they were....

I have to correct my previous post.  I passed Bethpage tonight, going eastbound and there IS in fact a 55 mph speed restriction sign for the Central Branch curve.
