I never actually thought about this until researching info on the DD1s & reading info about the PRR's operation into Penn. The tunnels that were used to go under the Hudson River back in 1910, are they still used? I assume that's how Amtrak gets out of Penn but never thought about it or read anything about it. I've never seen photos of the portals on the Jersey side either.

Same tunnels as 1910.  There are two, but I recall some talk about an NJ Transit project to build another within the decade to alleviate the congestion caused by both Amtrak and NJ Transit using them during peak hours.  I too have never seen any pictures of the western portals, but I believe looking at map that they would have to be somewhere in Bergen County near Route 1/9.

Thanks for the info guys. Whenever I'm at Penn & look out the west end I've always just seen the LIRR tracks entering the real world on their way to the yard. I never was on the NJT/Amtrak platforms to see out that way.

Thanks for those links John. I also found a photo in a book I have that I almost forgot about. It shows the portals (out in the open air) from Penn Station in 1937.

(The book is The History of the Pennsylvania Railroad by Timothy Jacobs, reprinted in 1994 by Smithmark Publishers. It's got a nice mix of color and B&W photos. My brother-on-law got it and some others about other railroads from a friend & thought I would like them. What a great guy!)
